This blog is aimed at helping publishers get the most out of WordPress. We’ll cover features that are often overlooked, we’ll highlight plugins that extend WordPress functionality, and we’ll showcase interesting sites being built with WordPress.
Sam Guzik over on CoPress.org details the successful relaunch of Student Life, the “independent newspaper of Washington University in St. Louis”, on the WordPress MU platform:
In their evaluation of various platform choices they concluded:
“Although Drupal is also extremely powerful, we found that WordPress’s interface was better suited to a workflow that would begin to allow [...]
I’ve been chatting with the folks at Tierra Innovation and WNET.ORG (Channel Thirteen in New York) on their impressive collaboration utilizing WordPress MU as a CMS for WNET.ORG’s network of high-traffic websites:
Using WordPress MU’s built-in features along with custom themes and plugins such as WPDB Profiling, they made it easier and much cheaper for WNET.ORG [...]

When publishers ask me for a great example of a community site built with WordPress, I always mention 9rules.com, a site where you can “Share. Learn. Discover” :

Built with WordPress and seamlessly integrated with our discussion forum software bbPress the site includes member profiles, streams, private messages, twitter and flickr integration, and much more.
As 9rules wrote on their blog a few months ago:
When it comes to coding up this site we have three options:
1. Do it ourselves.
2. Put a blindfold over Tyme’s eyes and four keyboards and hope that after a week of solitude she pushed out something cool.
3. Get someone else to do it.We went with 1 and 3, but not in the way you might be thinking. The core of 9rules is powered by WordPress, bbPress and simplepie. Now you can’t get both of those packages, install them and all of a sudden have another 9rules. We customized them a ton to fit our needs, but without them as the foundation we wouldn’t be close to where we are now.

Much love guys, thanks for the writeup. It’s definitely true, we’re proud to be powered by WP technology.
Wow, I would of never thought 9rules was powered by WordPress bbPress and simplepie!
I’ve got to take a closer look…
Mmmm you may have just answered some questions I have had!
I have a few websites (one finished and one just about to start) which could follow something like that.
Thanks for pointing it out!
I was so happy when the gives didn’t think I was crazy when I wanted to build 9rules on WordPress. I’m equally as happy with the great work that Mike and Paul have done since building onto, and improving, the site all the time.
